A Letter from Dr. Jamie ~ Perspective on Media Attention to Supplementation

Dr. Jamie McManus

Good News Doesn't Always Make the Headlines

I’d like to take a few moments of your time to provide some perspective on recent media attention to supplementation. It can be challenging to know what to trust, and we urge you to critically read articles about health and vitamins before assuming their validity - just as you would for any other reports from the Internet, a newspaper or the evening news.

Each year, hundreds of positive studies about nutrients and supplementation are published, the vast majority of which never make the news. Some examples of recently published clinical studies that have shown positive health outcomes include:

  • Calcium and vitamin D for osteoporosis prevention
  • Folic acid for preventing progression of cervical dysplasia, which are precancerous changes in the cells that line the cervix
  • Omega-3 fatty acids for reducing the risk of sudden death in people with existing heart disease,
  • Vitamins C, E , beta carotene and zinc for reducing the risk of age-related macular degeneration.
  • Just recently, a study from the Netherlands showed positive metabolic effects in obese men taking resveratrol for as little as 30 days.
That’s good news, but it’s really only a very small part of it.  And focusing on the positive contributions of dietary supplements is not only good for the people who use them, but for all of us.  The Lewin Group, a healthcare consulting firm, actually estimated the U.S. could save $24 billion over 5 years if our elderly used a few basic nutritional supplements.

We are very committed to contributing to a broader understanding of nutrition and supplementation.  Our dedication to clinical and scientific research separates Shaklee from the competition and has resulted in over 100 scientific papers—90 of them published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Recent examples of Shaklee sponsored studies are

  • The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism study from February, 2011, “A Resveratrol and Polyphenol blend suppresses the oxidative and inflammatory stress response to a high fat, high carbohydrate meal”
  • Our vitamin D intervention study published August, 2011 in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition entitled “Effects of Vitamin D supplementation on 25(OH)Vitamin D, HDL Cholesterol and other cardiovascular risk markers in subjects with elevated waist circumference”
Visit a prior blog post for more information and to see our most recently published studies.

A great way for you to read more about these and other studies and to receive regular updates on the latest research published on nutrition, supplements and health, is to visit and “like” the
Health Sciences page on Facebook.

Thank you for your loyalty to Shaklee. We salute your ongoing commitment to incorporating our nutritional and other health products on your journey to a longer and healthier life.

Be well!

Healthy Pumpkin Latte Recipe

This recipe is from Carol Cash. It is a healthy version of what you can get at Starbucks. The Starbucks Pumpkin Latte has 380 calories, 120 of which come from FAT! Plus it costs about $4.00! Carol’s version has 10 – 20 grams of protein, around 200 calories and less than 25 fat calories – plus it is made with real pumpkin, not pumpkin flavored syrup, so there is WAY less sugar as well.

Please try it out and let me know what you think!

Healthy Pumpkin Latte
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 -2 scoops Vanilla Cinch protein
  • 2 Tablespoons canned pumpkin
  • Heat gently – then add to
  • 1/2 cup hot brewed coffee
  • Top with whipped cream and cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice or nutmeg if desired

Dr. Oz Exposes Health Scams!

For your own health, and pocketbook, I urge you to watch Dr. Oz's health scam videos, part 1 -5. I am including part 1 - you can find the rest of the links for parts 2 - 5 on his website underneath this video. Did you know you might be buying products that have 7% of the listed ingredients in the bottles? Do you really want to waste your money like that? Really?

Here is the Consumer Labs page of Shaklee reviews. I believe you have to join to get the full results, but, you can rest assured that every product Shaklee makes and sells goes through rigorous testing (100,000 tests per year, every year, which is approx. 300 tests per day on our products!!!) and, they are 100% guaranteed to have what it says on the label in the bottles. Here are our clinical published studies and the Shaklee Difference.

Please look at what you are buying and putting into your body and your kids bodies. Do you even know? Do you know where it comes from or who makes it or if it it safe? Isn't that important to you? Why not put your health in the hands of a company that you can trust? A company that has been Creating Healthier Lives for over 55 years? I do, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

How to Read a Vitamin Label, by Dr. Stephen Chaney

How To Read A Multivitamin Label

Author: Dr. Stephen Chaney

Choosing a good multivitamin isn't easy. Everyone claims that theirs is the best. Many of them have exotic juices and exotic claims to go along with them. And nobody is minding the store. The food supplement industry is essentially unregulated. Unless the product kills people the FDA can't take it off the market.

So what should the conscientious consumer do? It's just like shopping for processed foods in the supermarket. You need to become a good label reader. Here are my tips to reading a multivitamin label:

Start With The Basics

1. Ignore flamboyant product names. Extravagant terms like "extra strength" or "meganutrition power" are used to sell the product and usually are empty catchwords. Ignore the name and study the label instead.

2. Look for nutrient amounts. Some companies will list a source, such as blue green algae or juice powder concentrate, but neglect to provide the amounts of many of the nutrients they claim to supply. How can you choose wisely if you aren't told what you are getting?

3. Make sure amounts are listed by percent of the Daily Value or DV, not just in mg or ug amounts. Very few consumers have memorized the DV amounts of all 24 nutrients. Labels should inform consumers of the percentage of each nutrient the supplement provides. This allows you to (1) compare amounts supplied by competing products, and to determine whether the supplement provides nutrients in proper proportion to one another.

4. Check to make sure that all 24 nutrients with established DV's are listed on the label. Count them. If it is a multi without iron there should 23.
If a product does not contain adequate amounts of some of the 24 nutrients, often the manufacturer will neglect to include these nutrients on the label.
For example, if a multi doesn't contain zinc, rather than list a zero, the manufacture will simply leave zinc off the label.

5. Don't be misled by "inflated" labels. Some supplements inflate the label by adding a lot of useless ingredients. One good example of a useless ingredient is para-amino benzoic acid, or PABA. PABA is a good sunscreen on the outside but useless on the inside. Bacteria can metabolize PABA into folic acid,
but humans cannot.

Another example is the addition of amino acids such as methionine to a multivitamin. Amino acids are macronutrients, not micronutrients. You simply can't put enough of them into a multivitamin for them to have any significant effect on the body.

Exercise Caution with the Following

1. "One-a-day tablets" - One-a-day tablets rarely supply adequate amounts of all 24 DV nutrients. Some minerals such as calcium require quite a bit of bulk, one tablet containing all the nutrients in proper amounts would be very large for an average person to swallow. Two tablets a day is a better option.

2. Supplements that contain artificial colors, artificial sweeteners, or chemical preservatives. We get enough of these in our everyday diets without "supplementing" for more. There are many of these agents. Some of the most common are FD &C Red #40, FD&C Yellow 96, shellac, BHT, BHA, and
sucralose.

Pick a Winner

Use the criteria below to eliminate the inferior products from your list of possibilities.

1. Zinc to copper ratio is important. For best absorption and maximum utilization by the body, these two minerals should be present in a 1:1 ratio of their DV's.

2. The amount of vitamin A should not exceed the 50% of the DV unless it's in the form of betacarotene. Preformed vegetable vitamin A is more toxic that vitamin A from beta-carotene. Ideally, the supplement should provide 50% of the DV as vitamin A and 50% as beta-carotene.

3. Calcium and magnesium should be present at near 50% of their DV's. Most Americans get only 50% of the DV for these nutrients from their diet, and these nutrients are absolutely essential for healthy bones.

4. If biotin or folic acid are left out or are present in insignificant amounts - even if the label passes all the other tests - do not buy the product.

5. B-complex vitamins in a "multi" should be supplied in approximately 100 percent of their DV's unless the "multi" is designed for a population group with special needs, such as pregnant and lactating women or the elderly. Make sure all eight B vitamins are supplied. Some manufacturers will leave out the expensive B vitamins and load up on the cheap ones in order to cut costs but still appear impressive. Niacin, thiamine, and riboflavin are relatively cheap. Biotin and folic acid are expensive. A supplement that gives 10% of the DV for biotin and 3000% of the DV for thiamine is ridiculous. There is absolutely no rationale for a ratio like this except to mislead consumers and make a profit at their expense. Even worse is the fact that an excess of one B vitamin can cause relative deficiencies in the other B vitamins.

The Winning Combination:

Adequate amounts of nutrients + Proper balance of the Daily Values = A winning multivitamin/multi-mineral supplement. Using these criteria, you will be able to select for yourself a high quality multivitamin/multimineral
supplement. From now on, you will not have to rely on a salesperson's advice, or be misled by a deceptive label or "hype" statements. You can make an informed choice based on what you have learned about reading labels knowledgeably.

These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This information is not
intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

There is help for you ~ My 5 year Cinch Success Story

Five years ago tonight, August 29, 2006 (for dinner), I started the *Cinch Inch Loss Plan. It came by UPS that afternoon and I couldn't wait to start! 5 1/2 months later I was 25 pounds and 27.5 inches lighter and smaller. I lost all fat and no muscle with Cinch. I went from a size 10/12 to a size 4 and I still wear a size 4 today! Never before in my life had I fit into a size 4, even when I was younger and weighed a few pounds less - that's because of the muscle I retained and the fat I lost - so I am leaner today :) This picture shows what 5# of lean muscle looks like as opposed to 5# of bulky fat on our bodies. This is WHY I can wear a size 4. It's not all about the weight - it's about the INCHES. And the inches melt away because of the unique blend of Leucine in the Cinch Shakes and Bars, along with the rest of the plan. I look better, look leaner, feel better in my clothes, and in every other way, too.

In just 5 1/2 months, I lost 4" in my waist and 5 1/2" in my hips. My starting Blood Pressure was 145/90 with meds and my ending BP without meds was 130/80. Last time I had it checked it was 124/75, still no meds. No meds at all, for anything, btw. My total cholesterol went down 46 points - LDL went down 40 points and HDL up 9 points to 64, which is difficult to raise, I hear, although it was not difficult for me. I just did Cinch :) My triglycerides dropped by 79 points (a nurse friend told me it was very difficult to drop these and had no real ideas for how to do so - my doctor had not given me any instruction except to do weight bearing exercises, which I was already doing). And, as I said, I am no longer on any medications. I never have to "diet" again! Cinch is not a diet though, it is a lifestyle. Cinch has changed my life in most every way and I am sooo thankful :)

For example, over 2 1/2 years ago I had an injury to my Achilles and I could not walk, run or do the eliptical machine for 9 months. I'm still not back to my normal exercise routine, which was running 3 miles, and don't know if I ever will be. My ankle still hurts when I think about it or if I try to run more than a mile. But, thanks to the food tracker on cinchwellness.com, now the Shaklee 180 app, I was able to change my activity level and get a new daily plan for myself so as not to pack on the weight while being mostly sedentary.

It's not all about the exercise either, even though that is an important factor, it is only 30 - 40% of weight loss. 60 - 70% is what you put in your mouth. What you eat, that is the real culprit. Cinch taught me a better eating plan and how stick to it. I have new eating habits that I will have for life now, thanks to the Cinch Inch Loss Plan.

Today I have a Cinch shake every morning ~ I wouldn't do without it. It gives me a great start to the morning. It's packed full with protein and fiber (incidentally, that is what Dr. Oz recommends for a healthy breakfast!). It gives me energy, and keeps me full until lunch time. Then I  usually have a normal and healthy lunch. I have a Cinch Energy Tea and a snack bar with some almonds between lunch and dinner. For dinner (and sometimes for lunch) I either eat a healthy "sensible" meal or I have a Cinch Shake or a Cinch Meal in a Bar. It depends what's going on, if I'm alone, or if I'm with friends, if I'm in a hurry or not, if I'm out and need a quick Meal Bar. The thing is, I can choose to eat regular 2 meals a day or not - that keeps my weight and inches off, along with exercise. I exercise 3 - 4X a week for 1 - 2 hours, doing both cardio and weights. I don't believe you can exercise yourself thin though - and good trainers will agree that it's more about what you eat.

Because of my Cinch success I have been able to help hundreds of people on Cinchclub.com. I have helped numerous people (too many to count), in my own circle of friends and family, to lose weight & inches, to get healthier & feel better, and, to feel better about themselves! I've held Cinch 10lbs in 6 weeks classes. I was even lucky enough to have author, educator and interventionist, Brad Lamm, come speak at one of my events!

I love helping people feel better - I love helping people change their lives with Cinch! I can help you, too. It works. It's proven and guaranteed. That is not the question. The question is, are you ready to be helped? Are you ready to stop dieting and change your life? Wouldn't it be nice not to have to ever diet again? Wouldn't it be nice not to have to make the same New Years Resolution every year? I haven't made that one in 5 years :) How many diets have you been on in the last 5 years? Do you weigh less, or more than you did before all those diets? Won't you let me help you get healthier? Won't you let me help you get started now? I'm ready. Are you?

*Cinch is now Shaklee 180.

How do you choose your products?

I've had 2 separate but related things stirring in my mind recently, so I will put them into one blog post.
I am curious - do you research what you put in and on your body or do you just buy/take anything? I'm speaking of vitamins and or diet products and other supplements? What about skin care and personal care. Do you know how many chemicals you take in every day? Do you buy into the latest fad? Just use something someone told you to use? How do you choose your products? Where do you get your info? Would you take meds that were unproven and untested and maybe not safe? What if only 15% of them had in the product what is on the label (which is true with supplements!)? Would you buy them? What about your car, would you put the cheapest products you could find into your car? Why would you treat your car better than your body?
Today I'm thinking as I read all of the FB posts in my thread of people who are hurting in many ways ~ If you only realized, once you join Shaklee, and get involved, a whole new world of possibilities, of health, of fun, of options will open up for you. Are you stuck? Unhappy with your life? Broke and/or unhealthy? You can change that today. What are you waiting for? Are you sitting on the sidelines? We want you to join us and be involved in all the fun and excitement! Take the plunge and see what it's all about. Once you join, GET INVOLVED! After all, you create your own reality. What are you creating? Who knows, your life might just change for the better, overnight! What have you got to lose?
I think this will help ~ I just found it today: How to read a vitamin label, by Dr. Stephen Chaney

Football, exercise prompt most heat-related hospital visits - Reuters

Just this morning I have read 2 posts, one about a football coach and one a young child being taken to the hospital from practicing in this excessive heat. Personally I think that no one should be practicing out in this heat, but especially not children! It is a GAME, it is not supposed to be life or death. If these were my children they would not be showing up.

We are in the middle of what is now the 2nd longest stretch of days at or above 100 degrees, on our 31st day with no end in site and record highs this week of 106 - 110. This is football people - it will wait. I know how people feel about their football but these are also children who don't have a choice. Let's make better choices for them as parents and coaches.

And in the end, if you insist on going out there, and making your children go out in this heat for practice football or anything else, may I recommend at least re-hydrating with a version of what the astronauts use upon re-entering the earths atmosphere that keeps them from passing out? It is called Performance by Shaklee. Look it up, do your research and you will find it will keep you re-hydrated better than water and does not contain the sugar and/or chemicals of other hydration beverages. Consider purchasing the Value Pack for the entire team. It comes in both Orange Flavor and Lemon-Lime. Dehydration is serious business - maybe you can prevent it.

You might want to read this report from Reuters.

A Letter from Dr. Jamie ~ The Science of Soy ~ Part Two

Letter from Dr. Jamie McManus

Hello Shaklee Family,

An Update on the Science of Soy – Part Two

See Part one here

Long valued as a healthy vegetarian source of protein, recent research has discovered important compounds in soy called isoflavones provide potentially powerful health benefits of their own beyond the simple delivery of healthy nutrients in soy, from protein to minerals.

For 50 years, Shaklee scientists have recommended soy protein consumption as part of a healthy diet. However, today we are also well aware of the great confusion among consumers and even health professionals about the health benefits of soy, because of a few very limited studies on soy that have received much attention on the internet.

Because nothing is as important to us as your well-being, we decided to consult an independent scientific expert on soy to review all the latest data for us and prepare a comprehensive review.

We chose Mark Messina, PhD, an adjunct associate professor at Loma Linda University and the Executive Director of the Soy Nutrition Institute.  Dr. Messina, an acknowledged leader in soy research, has made studying the health affects of soy his focus for over 20 years and has published more than 60 scientific papers and given more than 500 presentations on soy foods to health professionals around the world.

From his comprehensive scientific white paper prepared exclusively for us, Dr. Messina produced a two-part summary update on soy. Part 1, Soy and Your  Health: An Update on the Benefits, summarized the latest science on the health benefits of soy consumption. It covered a wide range of topics such as how a daily moderate intake of soy can promote heart health and bone health, potentially alleviate certain menopause symptoms and possibly even help keep skin looking beautiful.

Now in Part 2,
Soy and Your Health: Dispelling the Myths, linked to this letter, Dr. Messina addresses the misleading and inaccurate rumors about soy circulating on the internet. According to Dr. Messina’s careful review, many of these studies incorrectly link soy to adverse effects. So now it’s time to learn the truth about the so called “anti-nutrients” in soy, how soy really affects the thyroid, breast health, and brain function and the real differences between unfermented and fermented soy. Dr. Messina’s detailed investigation also includes reference citations of published scientific research studies he analyzed to reach his conclusions.

I know you will find this information interesting and useful. Please share this information about soy with others who are interested in learning the most up-to-date and scientifically accurate facts about soy.
Be well,

The Green Thing

Remembering my father making us tear our dinner napkins in 1/2, I received this in an email today. Author Unknown.

In the line at the store, the cashier told an older woman that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment.

The woman apologized to him and explained, "We didn't have the green thing back in my day."
The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment."

He was right --
our generation didn't have the green thing in its day.

Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled.

But we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks.

But she was right.
We didn't have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.

But that old lady is right;
we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana.

In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us.

When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.

Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back then.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water.

We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But we didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service.

We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?

My response: I like the new 1/2 paper towels they sell now ~ makes me feel right at home!

ConsumerLab.com tests Shaklee Vita-Lea

Did You Know?

Vita-LeaRecently, ConsumerLab.com, an independent testing lab, released the results of a review they conducted of 38 multivitamin supplements, one of which was Shaklee Vita-Lea® with Iron.

We were pleased to see that Vita-Lea passed the tests through which ConsumerLab.com put our product, unlike 13 competitor products which were also tested. But we weren’t surprised.

An essential element of the Shaklee Difference is quality control through testing. Shaklee quality means first defining specifications for and then screening raw ingredients themselves for purity and potency, testing each batch of manufactured product to ensure that what is on the label is in the product and to ensure the product has not picked up any contaminants in the process of manufacture. Shaklee conducts over 80,000 of these tests annually, and then guarantees the performance of every product once it is in the consumer’s hands.

Shaklee’s testing of our products actually goes far beyond the kind of testing that ConsumerLab.com put Vita-Lea and other products through, and that is why we continue to rely on our own quality standards and testing.

But I thought you might be interested in hearing the positive results of this recent review.

Note: ConsumerLab.com is a third-party testing company which tests products for manufacturers of nutritional supplements for a fee, but also sometimes conducts product reviews such as this one. Shaklee did not request to be included in this review or compensate ConsumerLab.com in any way. Access to the complete results of the review is available only to those who pay ConsumerLab.com for subscription membership.

A Letter from Dr. Jamie ~ The Science of Soy ~ Part One

Letter from Dr. Jamie McManus

Hello Shaklee Family,

An Update on the Science of Soy – Part One

Soy is a natural and traditional Asian food that nutrition scientists are continuing to study with renewed interest today. Long valued as a healthy vegetarian protein source, recent research has discovered vital compounds in soy called isoflavones, which provide potentially powerful health benefits of their own beyond the simple delivery of healthy nutrients in soy, from protein to minerals.

Science never stands still nor is complete. The findings of newer studies may provide conflicting results as compared to earlier studies or visa versa. This is true even in the case of a super food like soy. For example, there have been a few very limited studies on soy that have received much attention on the internet resulting in great confusion amongst consumers and even healthcare professionals. Certain websites have misrepresented the overall data on soy protein and I am quite concerned about this because when consumed as part of an overall well balanced diet, soy protein has great potential to help improve lives by reducing the risk of the leading causes of death and disability – heart disease, stroke and several types of cancer.

We are committed to monitoring the latest research and applying the very best nutrition research available to address people’s health concerns and support their overall health. Soy protein has been an important cornerstone of our nutritional programs and our consensus is that there are decades of favorable and positive epidemiologic and clinical evidence to support our perspective. Because we pride ourselves on having the highest standards for scientific research, we decided to engage an independent scientific expert to thoroughly review all of the soy research and write a complete scientific review.

Mark Messina, PhD is an adjunct associate professor at Loma Linda University and the Executive Director of the Soy Nutrition Institute.  A renowned soy expert, Dr. Messina has been studying the health effects of soy for more than 20 years and has published more than 60 scientific papers and given more than 500 presentations on soy foods to health professionals around the world. From his extensive scientific white paper, Dr. Messina has prepared a two-part update on Soy. Part 1, linked from this letter, provides the latest science on the health benefits of soy consumption. Dr. Messina’s detailed investigation cites published scientific research studies he analyzed to reach his conclusions and includes specific references to these studies at the end of each of the two parts of his report.

The first part of this series,
Soy and Your Health: An Update on the Benefits, gives you the latest information on favorable findings on soy.  Here you’ll learn about new research evidence for the numerous health benefits of soy – how a daily moderate intake of soy can protect against heart disease and stroke, may help prevent certain types of cancer, potentially alleviate menopause symptoms, support bone health and possibly even exert favorable effects on aging skin. To read the Part One of the series click here.

Then stay tuned next month for Part Two,
Soy and Your Health: Dispelling the Myths.  Learn the truth about the so-called “anti-nutrients” in soy, why soy isoflavones do not elevate breast cancer risk, how soy really affects thyroid and brain function, the real difference between unfermented and fermented soy and much more.

I know you will find this information interesting and useful. We have created these updates for you to share with others who also want to learn the most up-to-date and scientifically accurate facts about soy.

To your great health,
